Governor Corbett Signs Relaxed Happy Hour Rules

Gov. Tom Corbett, on Tuesday, June 28, 2011, signed legislation that allows more leeway for businesses to schedule discounted alcohol sales periods. It also lets liquor license-holding caterers provide and serve alcohol in off-site venues.

House Bill 148, sponsored by Representative John Payne, R-Dauphin County, increased the maximum length of happy hours in Pennsylvania to four hours per day, up from two, provided the total happy hour period in one week does not exceed 14 hours.

The changes also provide a framework for holders of restaurant and catering liquor licenses to supply and serve alcohol off-site at certain venues and approved events.

The bill passed the House on May 3rd by a 179-17 vote with industry and business support, and passed the Senate on June 21st by a unanimous vote of 50-0.
